The topics discussed in this course are positioned at the intersection of project management, system engineering, and decision theory. The course will introduce students to the theory of system engineering in construction engineering projects. Primary emphasis will be placed on the application of systems and decision theory to project planning and analysis. Advanced EPC Project Planning (Graduate Level) - Fall 2016 (CVEN-668 @ TAMU)
The purpose of this course is to examine in detail Front-End Planning; the first phase in project development in the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) process. A system approach will be followed in order understand different processes involved in Front-End Planning of mega-projects. Relevant process functions will be studied that support the Front-End Planning component of project development. Tools and techniques used to perform process functions will be presented. In addition, a system approach to project analysis is examined. Different concepts and techniques related to systems approach to project analysis will be covered. (Syllabus)

Sustainable Construction (Graduate Level) - Spring 2014 (Florida International University)
The course includes concepts and techniques of sustainable construction. It covered contemporary life cycle assessment theories and concepts related to sustainable development, resilience of complex systems, sustainability rating tools, green building and sustainable materials and methods. Besides learning general concepts and techniques of sustainable construction, students also learn specific concepts and skills of systems thinking and performing quantitative assessment to construction materials and processes (Syllabus)

The research team at I-SoS Research Group is interested in developing service learning projects. The paradigm of service-learning in higher education has been articulated as “a credit-bearing educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of the course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility” (Bringle and Hatcher, 1996). An example of previos activities is Dr. Mostafavi's participation in the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) Program at Purdue University in which he co-advised the Habitat for Humanity (HFH) team to develop sustainable housing solutions in Haiti.

Undergraduate Research Experience
The research team at I-SoS Research Group is interested in active engagement of undergraduate students in research projects. There are currently several undergraduate student researchers in the I-SoS team. An example of previous activities is Dr. Mostafavi's participation in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program at Purdue University where he was mentoring undergraduate students who were involved in research projects.

The research team at I-SoS Research Group is interested in active participation in K-12 programs to support STEM education. An example of previous activities is Dr. Mostafavi's participation in a ten-week long GK-12 (Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12 Education) program at Purdue University in which he co-taught 7th and 8th grade Math class (one day/week) to present the applications of Math in infrastructure management and developed and independently taught a lesson on infrastructure systems for 7th and 8th grade students at Tecumseh Junior High School, Lafayette IN.
